Hi everyone, I've been looking through the discussion boards for help with Chron Jobs. As you can see by my spelling error, I have no idea what these are! Ben has pointed out all of the places where you're prompted to set up a cron job, and these are super clear within Sendy. However, my issue is that I had no idea what to do with the command!. So, I started searching on the forum, but couldn't see a beginners guide.

In the end I searched for cron jobs on my hosting provider, which is Siteground. They have a short guide, but it was enough to point me in the right direction. (https://www.siteground.com/kb/category/tools/cron-jobs/).

So, if you're totally confused by where to put the command
php /home/***/public_html/sendy/scheduled.php > /dev/null 2>&1

Step 1 is to search for how to create a cron job on # with # being the name of your hosting provider

Step 2 is to read those instructions and find the place in your control panel to create cron jobs

Step 3 is to insert the command/time interval that appears in the cron job help boxes that are in the relevant places in Sendy

Just wanted to share in case it was helpful for someone else.

There is some good advice in the FAQ about setup of servers for speed.

I've been sending a newsletter to about 15,000 people, and started doing this about three years ago. I only recently, dimly, realised that I've been sending to Amazon SES's East US servers from a bespoke AWS Lightsail box in Ireland. If you're interested, I can therefore report back that if you send from "the wrong" SES region, your mailing takes about 25% longer to send since I've been able to do that experiment. (If "experiment" means "get everything wrong"). I hope that data point is useful for some here.

My Lightsail box is 1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 40 GB SSD, and only used for Sendy. It only goes up to about 15% CPU use when sending. For resilience, I also use the not-recommended Amazon RDS. That jumps to about 45% CPU use during sending (and sends around 5.5MB/s of network traffic). This is clearly the bottleneck in sending - and I only mention it here because Ben's relatively clear that you shouldn't be using RDS, and this might back him up in that view! I do not, however, ever get any timeouts or issues with sending - it's been super reliable and very excellent.

I'm perfectly happy with Sendy's sending speed. It's fine for my use: but, since I've been reading other threads here about sending speed, thought I'd chime in with my experience in case it helps future users.

I just upgraded to the latest version, and unfortunately, it's almost unusable to me because of two things that got changed with version 4.whatever instead of version 3.whatever. Those are the first two things. The third is something I've wanted for awhile, and the fourth is something that would be really great to see added to the Housekeeping tab.

First: "All lists" is now sorted by newest list, and it doesn't give me an option to re-sort it by name. I NEED my lists sorted by name. I have over 200 of them, and I named them specifically to be able to find them easily in the list. "Newest" is totally irrelevant to what I need. "By name" is what I need. It's fine to sort it in a different way by default, but can you please make it possible for me to sort it by name?

Second, and even worse: Templates now does the same thing. I really, really, really, really, really need my templates sorted by name, and again, I have no option to do this. "Newest" is beyond irrelevant to what I need. I have them named so that the ones I need the most frequently are in the front where I can find them easily, and the ones I need the most frequently are NOT the newest. Having them sorted by newest, with no way to change this, makes my templates almost an unusable mess.

Third: I'm not fond of the fact that pagination is forced upon us at 10 items per page. I've never liked that, because it makes life a hassle for me, and now that forced pagination on the Lists page as well as everywhere else. Could you give us an option to display more things per page? I've always wanted an option to show 10 / 50 / 100 / All. I'd prefer to display either 50 / 100 (for things like campaigns I've sent) or All (for Templates and Lists).

Fourth: The new Housekeeping tab is great. Could you give us an option to download did "Did not open" and "Did not click" lists, and not just an option to automatically delete them? I would like to be able to download those lists, send them through an unsubscribe sequence to catch anyone who wants to stay. This is important because sometimes people open, but they don't have images enabled, so no mailing list program can tell they've opened. Because that represents a good 1-3% of never-openers, I don't want to automatically delete never-openers; I want to send them through an unsubscribe sequence to catch those few diamonds that are hiding in the rough.

Would it be possible to implement these? I don't know much about programming, so I could be wrong, but it seems to me like these, in theory, shouldn't be too hard to include in a future update.

Hi there,

when using a custom domain all links are using the custom domain which is good.

But the file urls of uploaded images still use the main domain. In my opinion the image urls should use the custom domains as well. I see that there might be a problem with SSL using the CNAME configuration but the better way is to point the A-Record of the custom domain/subdomain to the Sendy installation which enables SSL for the custom domains, too an which would solve the ssl problem for loading images.

btw: there should be subfolders inside /uploads for each custom domain to be able to remove all uploaded files in case of removing a custom domain account.

Thanks and best regards,

when sending a mail choosing the lists to send the mail to is pretty awkward because

miss-clicking while scrolling through the list somtimes de-selects all

We like to normally use the unsubscribe link in our mailings, but have found lately that anti-spam bots are very aggressive, auto clicking all links in the mailings we send.

What is the recommended way we can have a user click on a "Unsubscribe" link to get a subscription maintenance page that lets them confirm an unsubscribe at that remote page? (so the link will have to be loaded with the list id and their email at minimum)

If this isn't possible, I guess this is a feature request - have the unsubscribe link not auto-unsubscribe upon clicking, but require a confirm send be pressed at the destination page.

This would be invaluable given how aggressive anti-spam processes are now.

I need unification of brands, links and sender's emails, for example, if the sender is
jhon@mycompany.com
all the links inside the email need to be
http://mycompany.com/...
Why? deliverability, gmail/yahoo/hotmail looks inside the email to get the junk folder, if i get some compliants with one campain, and the campain has links to my sendy installation, another campains (from other clients or brands) will be penalized too.

My first idea was delete traking but i remenber the unsuscribe link, and i really need the unsuscribe link in each email.

My solution:
1) make a dns cname record for the brand: example sendy.otherdomain.com => sendy.mydomain.com

2) modify include/config.php and add after
define('APP_PATH', 'http://your_sendy_installation_url');
a new line:

define('APP_HIDEME_PATH', 'http://sendy.otherdomain.com/');

3) modify scheduled.php, includes/create/send-now.php, autoresponders.php and in each line with
$html_treated
or
$plain_treated
replace APP_PATH for APP_HIDEME_PATH

Questions:
1) the w, l, and t dot php files will work if in the url have another domain ?

I do this and i think it's a good idea for the users of sendy.

Problem: 1) my Amazon micro instance is to little for my list sendy, 2) A medium or large instance is not cheap and i need it only in the sending time.

Idea: Has a micro's Sendy for tracking, preparing campains, and a large sendy for send.

Solution:
1) Install Sendy's Database in Amazon RDS
2) Install Sendy's in the microinstance, with the cron's (scheduled.php and import-csv) usinf the database in RDS
3) Install Sendy's in a medium o large instance using exactly the same folder, config.php, and database from the sendy's in microinstance
4) Comment scheduled.php in cron of sendy microinstance
5) Configure the scheduled.php in cron of the sendy medium of large

And now:
1) In the microinstance create a campaign as usual,
2) The campaign will no start (because we don't have cron)
3) Start the medium or large instance (this instance will send the emails)
4) Stop the medium instance at the finish of sending.

I use Drupal and Magento quite a bit and am able to automate the creation of users to csv files on those domain.

It might be quite good if we could specify a remote location in the Sendy backend where such a csv file lives. Then when Drupal (et al) update that file with new users cron could go fetch it and process it.

When sending emails to large enterprise customers, many of them have added email/virus scanning that checks every link in the email for viruses and trojans. While this may make them secure, it also mass unsubscribes all their employees from our newsletters.

Instead of automatically unsubscribing an email when the unsubscribe link is clicked, display a prompt for the user to unsubscribe with a confirmation button.

Bonus feature but not as urgent, allow the user to see which lists they are on and pick which to unsubscribe from.

Thanks for the great software, cheers!

It would be really great if the campaign list view showed the schedule date for future emails. I tend to build up a queue of future emails and it would be great to see the dates in a column. Sorting by this would also be fantastic.

Use case: Mail has been sent to 5 users with one or more links in the email body content, but only 2 users open the mail in "View images mode", so the system records that only 2 users have opened the email but I also see that there 4 users who have actually clicked on one or more link in the email body content.

Now its clear that 4 users have opened the email, but the system records it as only 2, since only 2 have opened the email in "View images mode". I think by tweaking the track links algorithm we can provide almost the better stats. Let me know what you think.

Thank you.

Hi @Ben
we think that are a functionality that it is very important and is missing on sendy.
i mean the INVALID EMAILS REPORT
we have several reports but not this,
for example i import this:

test1@sampledomain.com
test2@sampledomain
test3@sampledomain.com

on that scenario, only 2 address are imported, and that is correct, but the wrong one, doesnt exist in any place, so we dont have control on that, or the chance to fix some typo,

for example a client provide a 1000 emails database, and import only 900 (besides duplicates off course), so i need to send to my client an csv with the 100 invalid email addreses

do you think that can be implemented?
thanks!
Rod
