It may be helpful if people shared list size and performance, as well as what hosting provider they use?
I'm using small EC2 with small RDS from Amazon. Seeing consistent 50-60% cpu usage at "idle" with 120k in list.

That's true. If you don't mind the downtime that's a simpler method.

I don't think you have to worry about the rate, Amazon will throttle you if it needs to.

That's been my experience using an AWS micro instance.
I know sendy does some useful work filtering out invalid emails and checking for duplicates, but it is slow. Alternative, and costlier, solutions are much faster.

In my experience, an AWS micro instance can send via Sendy at about 5 mails per second. So your 50k list will take ~2.5 hours to send. It's your call if that's OK.
